Core Principles
Care
At Stone Lodge School, we prioritise the well-being of every pupil. Our curriculum team works closely with the therapy team, using our "Pyramid of Need" framework to understand and address each student's unique requirements. We recognise that effective learning cannot take place unless a child feels safe and supported within the school environment.
Understanding
We are dedicated to comprehending and addressing the academic needs of all our pupils. Recognising that many students may have gaps in their learning due to various circumstances, our first objective—once a pupil feels secure—is to assess their starting point and tailor support accordingly. A key focus of our educational approach is literacy. We acknowledge that proficiency in reading is fundamental to accessing the broader curriculum, as "reading is the gateway skill that makes all other learning possible." Our initial assessments evaluate pupils' phonological awareness, reading fluency, and comprehension skills. Our trained staff conduct these assessments individually, ensuring that any necessary targeted interventions are implemented. Subject leaders then conduct further assessments in curriculum-specific areas, with a particular emphasis on English and Mathematics. At Stone Lodge School, we utilise PiXL to support this process. The resulting data analysis informs the support strategies required to bridge learning gaps effectively.
Ambition
We maintain high ambitions for all our pupils, providing a structured qualification pathway that fosters confidence and facilitates the realisation of their full potential.
Pupils follow a clear, progressive framework, beginning with Entry Levels, advancing to Functional Skills, and culminating in GCSEs. This progression is designed to be flexible, accommodating individual learning paces while generally adhering to the following structure:
- Key Stage 3: Completion of Entry Level qualifications in English, Science, and Mathematics.
- Year 9: Completion of Functional Skills Level 1
- Key Stage 4: Completion of GCSEs, alongside BTEC and vocational qualifications at Levels 1 and 2.
