Careers
Vision
At Stone Lodge Therapeutic School, careers education is embedded throughout the curriculum and wider school experience. All pupils are supported to develop self-awareness, confidence, resilience, employability skills and aspirations through a therapeutic, personalised approach. Careers learning is delivered through curriculum subjects, therapeutic interventions, enrichment activities, employer encounters, community engagement, vocational learning opportunities and preparation for adulthood pathways.
Whilst this programme outlines our planned careers offer, we recognise that every young person at Stone Lodge Therapeutic School has unique strengths, needs and experiences. As a trauma-informed school, we work at the pace of each individual pupil, adapting opportunities and support accordingly. Careers education, preparation for adulthood and transition planning are delivered through a collaborative whole-school approach, working closely with pupils, families, carers and external professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for every child.
The Eight Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance
The Gatsby Benchmarks set out what good careers provision looks like. Our careers programme is mapped against all eight.
-
Benchmark 1: A stable careers programme
A structured careers programme, backed by senior leadership, that is known and understood by pupils, parents, teachers and employers.
-
Benchmark 2: Learning from career and labour market information
Every pupil, and their parents or carers, has access to good-quality information about future study options and the labour market, with support to make the most of it.
-
Benchmark 3: Addressing the needs of each young person
Careers guidance is tailored to the needs of each pupil at each stage, including pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
-
Benchmark 4: Linking curriculum learning to careers
All teachers link what they teach to careers, showing pupils how their subjects relate to a wide range of future paths.
-
Benchmark 5: Encounters with employers and employees
Every pupil has multiple opportunities to learn from employers and employees about work, employment and the skills valued in the workplace.
-
Benchmark 6: Experiences of workplaces
Every pupil has first-hand experience of the workplace through visits, work shadowing or work experience.
-
Benchmark 7: Encounters with further and higher education
All pupils understand the full range of learning opportunities open to them, including academic and vocational routes, colleges, universities and learning in the workplace.
-
Benchmark 8: Personal guidance
Every pupil has opportunities for guidance interviews with a trained careers adviser whenever significant study or career choices are being made.
Measuring our provision and its impact
We assess the success of our Careers programme using the Compass+ system and measuring ourselves against the Gatsby Benchmarks. This is carried out at least three times a year and we complete an annual Internal Leadership review with an external assessor to check the evidence. We use both face-to-face discussions and the Compass+ Future Skills Questionnaire (FSQ) to gain valuable student and parent voice input, as well as feedback from teaching and support staff on the effectiveness of the programme. We also make use of destination data for school-leavers to inform and review our provision. After every event we also seek feedback from those who have provided their time for how we can improve.
Destination data for our Year 11 and Year 13 school-leavers is published annually on our onward journeys page.
Our Career Partners
Our structured careers and transition programme is built on national best practices. We proudly collaborate with external partners, professional bodies, and strategic networks to evaluate, enhance, and deliver our curriculum. These partnerships ensure our provision meets the highest standards for SEND career development.
